This study was initiated to understand the growth retarding arid flowering responses of Tulipa gesneriana L. with paclobutrazol (PP 333) treatment after bulbs were stored at 5¡É for 9 weeks.
Soil drench with 2.5 and 5.0 §· a.i./pot PP 333 markedly reduced lengths of internodes, but foliar spray with 250 and 500§·/§¤ PP 333 resulted in increased floral bad blasting. Bulb soaking in PP 333 solution (25, 50§·/§¤) was almost ineffective.
When PP 333 was drenched in soil 3 weeks after planting in `Golden Apeldoorn¢¥, flowering rate was somewhat decreased. Treatment with a high concentration of PP 333 6 weeks after planting resulted in increased floral bud blasting. However, plant height was greatly reduced when 2.5 and 5.0§· a.i./pot PP 333 was drenched in soil either 3 weeks or 6 weeks after planting in `Merry Widow¢¥.
PP 333 reduced cell elongation of the second internodes with a concomitant radial enlargement arid cell radial enlargement of leaves. From these results, it is concluded that PP 333 can reduce plant height effectively when the soil drenching is given within 3 weeks from bulb planting.
